The HSE allowance for wigs is available every year to Irish residents. If you the cancer diagnosis, you're entitled to financial help for your wig or hairpiece. If you have hair loss or thinning hair caused by alopecia, you may be entitled to claim from the HSE if you've a valid medical card.

In late December 2024 the HSE implemented a new standard allowance for wigs, designed to provide fair support for all cancer patients across Ireland.

Previously, access to these allowances was restricted by address and limited medical card holders only, creating challenges for many individuals. With this new scheme, all counts cancer patients can now benefit from consistent financial assistance. Regardless of their address eligibility status, ensuring greater access to essential products and treatment during recovery. As of yet, the HSE has not made any announcement amendments to the allowance for alopecia. This alopecia with grant still abides by the old guidelines requiring a valid medical card and the allowances value determined by the client's home address.
